Resolving Frege’s Other Puzzle

چکیده
Abstract Number words seemingly function both as adjectives attributing cardinality properties to collections, in Frege’s ‘Jupiter has four moons’, and names referring numbers, ‘The number of Jupiter’s moons is four’. This leads what Thomas Hofweber calls Other Puzzle: How can modifiers singular terms if neither nor serve multiple semantic functions? Whereas most philosophers deny that one these uses genuine, we instead argue words, like many related expressions, are polymorphic, having whose meanings systematically via type shifting.

Drinking in snakes: resolving a biomechanical puzzle.
Snakes have long been thought to drink with a two-phase buccal-pump mechanism, but observations that some snakes can drink without sealing the margins of their mouths suggest that buccal pumping may not be the only drinking mechanism used by snakes. Here, we report that some snakes appear to drink using sponge-like qualities of specific regions of the oropharyngeal and esophageal mucosa and spo...

متن کاملResolving Other-Anaphora
Reference resolution is a major component of any natural language system. In the past 30 years significant progress has been made in coreference resolution. However, there is more anaphora in texts than coreference. I present a computational treatment of other-anaphora, i.e., referential noun phrases (NPs) with non-pronominal heads modified by “other” or “another”: [. . . ] the move is designed...
